Animal tissues

A tissue is a group of connected cells that perform a similar function within an organism.

All animals, including the human body, have four basic types of tissues in the body. They form organs, structures, and other parts of the body. The figure below represents an example of each tissue type.

Animal tissues have four basic types:

Epithelial tissue is made up of layers of tightly packed cells which line the surfaces of the body for protection, discharge and absorption. The examples of epithelial tissue include lining the skin, mouth and nose and lining of the digestive tract.

The muscle tissue is composed of cells which have the contractile nerve going beyond one another and change the shape of the cell. There are three types of muscle tissue: the smooth muscle found in the inner lining of the organs; the skeletal muscle, which is attached to the bone and moves the body; and the heart muscle that is found only in the heart.

Nervous tissue is composed of nerve cells (neurons) that make up the nervous system including the brain and spinal cord.

Connective tissue is composed of a number of different types of cells that join the structure and base of the body, bone, blood, fat, and cartilage are all connective tissues. The connective tissue can be densely packed or loosely packed like bone cells.
