Winter rainfall in North India occurs mainly because of the western disturbance which originates in the Mediterranean Sea. It is an extra tropical storm which originates from the above sea.

This western disturbance brings rainfall in the north part of the country. The two winds which brings rainfall to this region are South monsoon and North eastern monsoon which is considered as very useful for the rabi crops.

The Rabi season mainly begins in November and extend up to March or even April. The ideal rainfall for rabi crop should be about 50 cms to 90 cms.
