The light returns to the denser medium. It happens due to a specific process.

This process is known as Total Internal Reflection.

Case 1: The light bends towards a line called normal. It happens when the light starts from a medium that is rarer and enters to a medium that is denser.

Case 2: But the light bends outwards from the same line called normal. It happens when the light starts from a medium that is denser and enters to a medium that is rarer.

There is an angle between the refracted ray makes and the normal. This angle is called angle of incidence.

In the case 2, when this angle of incidence approaches a specific angle, the refracted ray gets along the boundary of the two mediums. The angel of refraction with the normal is equal to 90-degrees during this moment. This angle of incidence is called THE CRITICAL ANGLE.

It is the maximum angle of incidence where refraction occurs.

An when this Angle of Incidence becomes more than the Critical Angle, then no light enters into the 2nd medium and it returns back to the previous medium. This returning back of light is referred to as Total Internal Reflection.
