According to the theory,  the primary sporophyte of bryophytes was mild and most of the sporogenous tissue was productive (e.g., Riccia) and from such a sporophyte, the more complicated sporophytes (e.g., mosses) have been developed by the progressive sterilization of potential sporogenous tissue. This theory is also known as the “theory of sterilization”.
