The Northern Plain was formed by the deposits brought in by the three major rivers and their tributaries. Alluvium was deposited at the foot–hills of the Himalayas for millions of years. These deposits are now the fertile Northern Plains. Alluvium is soil or sediments deposited by a river or other running water.

Northern plains of India are vast stretches of fertile land. It is rich in alluvial soil. It stretches from Punjab to West Bengal. It has very big population size. Alluvial soil is renewed by rivers like Ganga,Kosi etc. These plains enter Rajasthan through a narrow corridor.Alluvial soil is rich in lime, phosphoric acid and potash. This plain has 2400 km length and width varies from 240km to 320km.These plains are divided into 4 parts-

2)Terai-Vast forests cleared to settle people after 1947 partation.
3)Bangar-This is old, coarse alluvium. It has calcereous deposits called Kankar.
