Buccal cavity: Is also called as the oral cavity, it is a large space bounded by the palate above it, throat with tongue below and jaws with the teeth on the sides of each. Salivary glands open into it (buccal cavity).
It has three components in the space provided.
a) Palate: Palate or roof of the buccal cavity is a secondary structure which is actually differentiale into anterior hard palate and posterior soft palate. The hard palate has transverse palatine rugae supported by the bones for holding during food mastication. Soft palate has smooth surface where, it takes part in the act of swallowing. There is a hanging conical flap called uvula (a musculane piece just above and posterior to the tongue) and is meant for closing internal nares.
b) Tongue: It is a muscular, protrusible mobile flattened structure which is extending into a part of pharynx, and is attached to the basal part by a fold called frenulum. Anterior or apical region is totally free. Sulcus terminalis divides it into pharyngeal part and the oral part. Superior surface bears four types of papillae- vallate (large sized 8-12, along sulcus terminalis, taste buds present in the surrounding groove), foliate ( 4-5 transverse folds following on the sides of sulcus terminalis with taste buds present on it), fungiform (red rounded, along tip and margin, they are medium size die without any presence of taste buds) and filiform (they are the smallest in size, most numerous, white in colour, conical in shape, most surface covered without a presence of taste bud).
c) Teeth: They are the hardest structures meant for tearing, crushing, cutting and holding of the food. There are many types of teeth, such as, acrodont, thecodont, polyphodont, solenodont, heterodont, etc. A tooth will have three parts- crown (which is exposed part to the buccal chamber), neck (surrounded by a gum) and root (embedded in the tooth socket with connection of blood vessels).
