There are many factors which play a role in determining which crop should be cultivated in a given area.

1.    Topographic factors – The physical and chemical nature of the soil like the texture, pH, organic matter content, fertility level, color etc. in addition to the slope, elevation, and terrain of the land.

2.    Climatic Conditions – the prevailing climate type, the rainfall levels, temperature, humidity, the incidence of light, water supply, the possibility of natural disasters like typhoons etc. allow a lot of possibilities in crop selection.

3.    Farming system – it is important to identify the farming system of selected crops to know if they are for monoculture or if they are capable of multi-cropping, if they are to be integrated with livestock animals or if they are anti-herbivores, and if they have a wide resistance to diseases and pests.
