the three major classes of musical instruments are

stringed instruments : in stringed instruments sound is produced by a vibrating string.the shrillness or pitch of the sound is altered by changing the length of vibrating portion of the string . these instruments also have an air chamber which helps increase the loudness of the sound produced .example violin, guitar, sitar

winded instruments : in wind instruments sound is produced by the vibrating air coloumn inside the instrument .the pitch of the sound is altered by changing the lenght of the vibrating air column examples, trumpet, flute, harmonica

percussion instruments : in percussion instruments sound is produced by a vibrating skin or membrane .the pitch is altered by increasing or decreasing the tension in the membrane example tabla drums dholak

hope it helps
