Bhabar, Terai, and the Alluvial Plains are the three sections into which the Northern Plains have been divided.

  • The Bhabhar section is a narrow belt of land around 10 km in width. It runs parallel to the Shivalik ranges.
  • In this region, the underground water level in this region is quite deep.
  • The Terai section is located down south of the Bhabhar Belt. It is about 20 km in width.
  • The region is very swampy, wet, and marshy for the most part. The water level here is higher than that of the Bhabhar region.
  • The third and final section of the plain is the Alluvial Plain. It is further divided into the Khadar and Bhangar plains.
  • The Khadar plains are newer and younger deposits of flood plains which are replenished every year due to frequent floods.
  • The Bhangar plains are older plains that contain older alluvium. These lie above the floodplains.
