Answer:

If a solid object is placed on another stationary solid object in such a way that both plain surfaces touch each other, then in this case we can say that a force has been applied for the second object to slide on the first object. If the value of this force is less than a limit, the second object cannot slide on the first object. This opposing force is called friction.

Friction is a type of force that opposes the relative tangential motion between two planes. The value of the friction force depends on the normal force between the two planes.

There are two types of friction and they are static friction and kinetic friction. Static friction is applied in the direction parallel to the surface of contact of two bodies, but kinetic friction does not depend on the direction of motion.

The useful examples of frictions are-

  • Driving a vehicle on a surface
  • Applying the vehicle brakes to stop a moving vehicle
  • Skating
  • Walking on the road
  • Writing on a notebook/ blackboard
  • Flying of aeroplanes

Three problems caused by friction are :

  • Friction produces heat which damages the moving parts of a machine or vehicle.
  • Friction produces wear and tear on the contacting surfaces which reduces the life of machine parts, tyres and shoe soles.
  • A lot of energy is wasted in overcoming the friction before any object starts moving.
