Oxygen is a very important gas which is formed biologically by the physiological process of Photosynthesis.

Oxygen serves for many functions:
1. It is the respiratory gas which all organisms on earth breathe in.

2. In industries, oxygen is used to prepare HNO3 by Ostwald Process.

3. Oxygen is used for roasting metals for their extraction.

4. Oxygen is used to oxidize sulphur dioxide to suplhur trioxide (in presence of Vanadium pentaoxide) to prepare Sulphuric acid in industry by Contact Process.
