In earlier times, education was chiefly based on secular education from institutions like that of Buddhist centers of learning.

Two of the most prominent centers were those if Taxila and Nalanda.

There were a number of institution which were functional in colonies for the British people as well.

Lot of information has even been acquired from various literary sources that are the contributions of foreign travelers or Chinese travelers who had traveled to India at some point of time.

So the two chief forms were basically Buddhist form of learning and  Indian educational institutional form of learning. Medium of instruction used ton English and other vernacular languages.
