There are three protective layers to cover the heart or to protect the heart.

Epicardium - This is the "outer most layer" of the heart which forms the "pericardium of the heart". This is composed of elastic fibers, loose connective tissue, and adipose tissue.

Myocardium - This is the "middle layer" of the heart. This is composed of "cardiac muscle fibers" which help the heart to contract. This is the thicker layer of the heart.

The other layer is Endocardium.
