Filtration is a method for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid.

As we already know that filtration works almost best when the solute isn't dissolve in the solvent

Two examples of mixture that can be separated by filtration are:-

  1. Sand and water can be seperate through filtration as both compounds do not dissolve with each other. When a mixture of sand and water is filtered: the sand stays behind in the filter paper (it becomes the residue ) the water passes through the filter paper (it becomes the filtrate )
  2. Tea leaves from tea as they can be also separated because their compounds do not dissolve with each other.

However, the above examples match with the above criteria, some do not mix like:-

  1. sugar and water would not be seperated through filtration as they dissolve with each other.
  2. salt and water would not be seperated through filtration as they dissolve with each other.
