PROTECTIVE TISSUES
All plants have protective tissues which have a direct contact with the environment and it helps the plants to be safe from any injury or infection.
Below are some protective tissues :-
1. EPIDERMIS
It is single layer of the cells that is covering part of leaves, flowers, root, stems etc. which means that it is the outermost covering of plants body. It has the following functions :-
Cells of this tissue have diverse functions.
They usually are tightly linked to each other due to which it provides mechanical strenght to plant and protects it.
This epidermal cells secrete a waxy substance on plant parts above the ground level, this waxy substance is called cutin.
This cutin form a layer called cuticle.
This cuticle helps to prevents water loss in the plants.
It's thickness depends on the humidity of environment.
2. Stomata
Stomata is the pores present beneath the leaf of the plant. This opening and closing of the stomata is controlled by the guard cells. It has various functions some of them are :-
It helps in the process of transpiration in which the waste water vapour is exhaled.
It helps in the process of photosynthesis by taking the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and thus helps plants to prepare food.
It also helps us by giving out the oxygen prepared by the plants.
At night it helps the plants exchanging gases in the plants by process of respiration.
