The animal feed is classified into two types of substances namely,

(a). Concentrates is a mixture of substances which are rich in one or more nutrients such as fats, proteins, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. It has low content in fibres, but has high protein content and other nutrients. It also includes oil seeds, cotton seeds, barley, oats, jowar, gram, bajra and other byproducts such as gram husk, oil seed cakes, rice barn etc.

(b). Roughage largely contains fibres such as green fodder, silage, hay and legumes such as cow pea, berseem etc.

The function of these animal feed is to promote the growth of animals, facilitate good yield of milk and provide protection from diseases.
