Nancy buys 15 meters of ribbon and her sister buys 6m less ribbon but pays twice as much per metre. Between them the pay R6.00. What is the price per meter of two different types of ribbon?
Answers
Given :
Length of ribbon bought by Nancy = 15 meters
Length of ribbon bought by her sister = 6 m less
= 15 - 6 = 9 meters
Amount paid by Nancy = Rs x
Amount paid by her sister = twice of Nancy's amount
= Rs 2 x
Total amount paid for the ribbon = Rs 6
To Find :
Price per meter of two different types of ribbon
Solution :
∵ Total amount paid for the ribbon = Amount paid by Nancy + Amount paid by Nancy's sister
Or, Rs ( x + 2 x ) = 6
Or, 3 x = 6
∴ x = = Rs 2
So, Amount paid by Nancy = Rs x = Rs 2
Amount paid by her sister = 2 x = 2 × 2 = Rs 4
For Nancy
Length of ribbon bought by Nancy = 15 meters
Amount paid by Nancy = Rs 2
So, Applying unitary method
∵ Cost of 15 m ribbon = Rs 2
∴ cost of 1 m ribbon = Rs
= Rs 0.133 per meter
Again
For Nancy's sister
Length of ribbon bought by Nancy's sister = 9 meters
Amount paid by Nancy's sister = Rs 4
So, Applying unitary method
∵ Cost of 9 m ribbon = Rs 4
∴ cost of 1 m ribbon = Rs
= Rs 0.44 per meter
