Nandankanan, July 5: Nine tigers died within 16 hours after being administered bernyl injections on an empty stomach at Nandankanan Zoological Park near Bhubaneshwar. Seventeen of the 54 tigers at the zoo were given the vaccine. Of these, four, in a serious condition are groaning in pain at the zoo hospital. Kolkata zoo authorities have sent life saving medicine for the tigers in Nandankanan hospital, says PTI from Kokata.   Among the victims were siz of the zoo's 23 white tigers. Incidentally, Nandankanan has the highest number of the white tigers in captivity.   The nine tigers which died were injected with bernyl on Monday, the day when the big cats are not fed. But zoo officials ruled out the possibility of bernyl having caused the deaths. "We've sent the carcasses for post mortem to Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology's Veterinary Ilospital. Till we get a detailed report from them nothing can be said," said an official. The first death occurred yesterday evening and the last this morning. Nandankanan authorities and senior officials were unable to determine the cause of the deaths. The tigers lost muscular movement in their hind legs and saliva oozed out of their mouth before they collapsed, experts at the post mortem centre said.   The official version is that medicine was given on the basis of a report that a tiger had died of trypanosomiasis on June 23. Again on July some of the big cats showed similar symptoms. But the experts found toxemia and congestion of internal organs. The deaths could have been due to infectin or drug reaction, they said.
