Substitute for indigo
The nitrogenous material ‘indoxyl’ is a substitute for natural indigo.
The chemical formula for indoxyl is C8H7NO and it is obtained by treating N-Phenylglycine with molten mixture of certain other chemicals or by heating carboxy-phenyl glycine to a high temperature with sodium hydroxide. Earlier, this synthetic indigo was not preferred by textile manufacturers because of the high cost involved in producing it.
The original indigo dye is a natural compound extracted from the indigo plant.
