There are many socio-economic and ecological crisises that arise due to construction of big dams. Some of the crisis are as stated below:

1. Large number of inhabitants of the locality must be displaced (Social issue):

In order to construct a big dam like Sardar sarovar dam, a large number of inhabitants of the in the area surrounding the dam are must be displaced. Moreover the oustees are neither rehabilitated properly not being given enough compensation by the govt.

2. It affects the flora and fauna of the river ecosystem:

Constructing barriers on the river restricts its free flow. This has adverse effects on animal and plant life the river's ecosystem.

3. Destruction and submerging of vegetation in the surroundings:

When rivers are dammed, forest around the site of construction should be removed. When it is mostly removed in some cases they are not. And hence this natural vegetation gets submerged under water. The submerged vegetation decay to produce methane. Methane causes global warming.
