Probably my favorite dog in the world was a big old boxer a friend had. She lived with a bunch of small dogs, and so she thought she was a small dog as well. She would run up to you the same way, trying to wag her nub of a tail, and expecting to be treated the same way as the others. If you missed her (for any reason, even if she was standing at the back of the pack), she would walk over to the corner of the room you were in, face the wall, then glare over her shoulder at you. As soon as she noticed you looking at her, she’d turn back to the wall, then she’d do it all over again until you called her to you and paid attention to her. Needless to say, this dog had personality.
Anyway, one cold December, one of the other dogs had puppies. There were six of them and they were about an ounce each. The owner gave away all but two, but these two were incredibly smart and loved this dog. Somewhere, I have a picture of them climbing all over the boxer like she was a mountain. She would lay down and play with them, dropping her massive paws on them, then picking it up, puzzled by why they didn’t move. As soon as she moved her paw, they would jump up and start running all over her again. At one point, she was play growling with the two when one decided to jump in her mouth. If I could have stopped laughing long enough, I would have helped her by pulling the pup out of her mouth, but instead, I slid down the wall laughing while this wiggly puppy sat there, completely pleased with herself in her mouth and the boxer looked imploringly around with her mouth wide open. She grunted like I do when I’m at the dentist’s office and they ask me a question and both of the dentist’s hands are in my mouth. Eventually, the pup jumped back out of her mouth and the boxer gave me a disgruntled look. I apologized and we all went on with our day. Both dogs have grown up, grown old, and passed away, but it still makes me smile when I picture her from that day.
