Coal is a black coloured solid, amorphous substance. It originates from organic material and comprises of carbon. Coals were primarily formed by submergence of large organic or vegetative substances beneath the earth’s crust and its subsequent chemical decomposition over millions of years. Much of the present-day high quality coals were deposited during carboniferous geological era (250 million years ago).

Multiple and complex reasons might be responsible for that large scale deposition of vegetal cover. Some possible reasons include increase of sea level due to de-glaciation—leading to burial of extensive forests under thick alluvium; or, tectonic movements resulting in submergence of large forest cover or any other series of earth movements and resultant decaying and chemical decomposition of buried vegetation.

As coal is transformed from vegetation and deposited by alluvium, it is only found within sedimentary rock structures. Coal is considered a sedimentary rock. Most of the present-day coal reserves are found in the peneplain or low dip folding’s of sedimentary formation.

look here's what i found !

The production and use of coal has a very long history. Coal has been mined at a small scale since pre-historic times, but it truly became the dominant global fuel in the 18th century, providing the energy required by the technological advances of the Industrial Revolution.

Today, many people are surprised to discover that coal is equally as important as oil and gas in the modern energy mix, providing ~1/3rd of global daily energy demand and, as it is dominantly used for power generation, ~ 42% of the world’s electricity.

Coal use is also growing rapidly. China’s coal demand tripled between 2001 and 2011, from 600 million tonnes of oil equivalent to nearly 2 billion tonnes of oil equivalent. Today, China’s domestic coal industry produces more primary energy than Middle Eastern oil does. And over the next few decades coal is predicted to be the fastest growing global energy source, growing by over 1 billion tonnes of oil equivalent by 2030. This is more than either conventional or shale gas, and almost double the growth in conventional oil and shale oil combined.

hope it helps you and plz refer to attachment ! you will get some more information about the story of coal through that.
