The incident took place on 1st Oct 1971, when Two  young  Canadians  Malcom Aspeslet, aged 19, and Barb Beck, aged 18, were on  their  longest  date, that is a  hike  to  the Balu Pass, which was 6700 feet up in Glacier National Park, British Columbia. On the trail they had encountered a female grizzly bear that attacked Barb and Malcom savagely.

Explanation:

• Halfway  down the hike,  Malcom and Barb met  a  mother  grizzly  with  2  cubs. The bear was charging with rage and fury. Malcolm swiftly pushed Barb into a snow bank and when he tried to duck for a second the bear's swipe of the paw knocked him senseless. When he came to conscious, Malcom saw that the bear standing on Barb’s leg and biting her near the back of her neck
• Immediately, he took his knife and jumped on the back of the bear to plunge the blade into her neck. However, the bear shook back, sending   Malcolm’s   knife   flying   and   broke Malcom's wrist. Then, she embraced him, and mauled him, her claws  raking his face. Malcom,  closed his eyes and stopped fighting, thinking it all was over. The bear lost interest once he stopped moving and swatted him again, and "then scraped dirt and twigs over Malcom and lumbered  away."
• Seeing Malcolm's virtual pulp, barb screamed "Malcolm, hang on – I'm going for assistance," screamed barb, . As he was waiting, "he prayed and wondered if  he would ever live, and what it would look like, if he ever did." Although Barb was badly mauled, she ran 2.5 miles to the forest lodge where they both had worked, so as to get help.
• Rescuers  found Maclom and rushed to  the  hospital where he was pieced together.  Malcolm injuries were severe necessitating over 1,000 stitches and over 41 skin-graft operations. The attack left him blind in one eye, and though a mjor part of  Malcom's right side of his face was reconstructed by plastic surgery, it remained paralysed because of a nerve damage. the following  months in the hospital,   Maclom depressed   over   his   new ugliness, retreated into himself. But Barb never stopped loving him and kept in contact with Malcom persistently.
• For his heroic act Malcom was awarded several medals and honours inlcuding a  personal  decoration  by  the  hand  of  the  Queen  of  England. A   year  or  so later after the incident, Malcom and Barbara were married
