On 10th April 1919,Dr Satyapal and Dr Kitchlu, two local leaders in Amritsar were arrested in connection with the Rowlatt Act movement. This arrest was followed by an attack on symbols of British authority. A public meeting was held on 13th April 1919 on the day of Baisakhi, at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. Protesters, men, women and children had gathered to protest peacefully against the arrests. It was a large ground with only one narrow gate. General Dyer, the military commander came to the park with some soldiers, blocked the only gate and ordered the unarmed Protesters to be fired upon. A large number of people were killed and many more were critically wounded.
