When you're studying languages, only about half your learning takes place in the classroom. Most language courses offer a whole host of events that are designed to give you the opportunity to supplement your classroom learning. Read on as University of Southampton modern languages student Elizabeth Grant explains a few of them...
Language socials and outings
University students who share a common interest get together and form clubs and societies that are often subsidised and very well managed. Most universities have language societies (e.g. Frensoc, Gersoc and Spansoc) that organise events based on the language they represent - French theatre, Spanish salsa dancing, German beer tasting. Universities may also have national societies if they have a big enough student population e.g. Latin American Society, Mauritian Society, Japanese Society etc. Societies are a great way to make friends and get involved with university life, and in your first year you will be encouraged to join as many of them as possible.
