Visit to Ancestral House
Sometimes such exceedingly bizarre experiences happen to us that we are left dazed and stupefied in their wake. Afterwards when we gain control of our senses we thank God that we are alive! These experiences usually take us by surprise. One such blood curdling experience I had when I visited my ancestral village.
It was quite late in the evening that I reached my ancestral village on yearly inspection round. As I walked from the bus stand to the house black clouds veiled the sky. The streets and lanes were deserted. The shops and the houses locked. Not a soul was astir. I felt so lonely walking all by myself. The dog howls from the remote corner of the village further scared me. Big drops of rain began to fall.
As I inserted the key to the main door and turned the key in the rusty groove of the lock, I felt so lonely and fearful. The wooden door creaked on its hinges with the creak echoing in the entire old house! As my hands searched for the switchboard in the utter dark, my hand touched something and I flinched; then a bat whizzed past me! ‘Click’ I switched on the light button! But it remained dark! Either there was no light or some fault had disrupted the power supply!
I edged towards the kitchen; finally I got hold of a candle and match stick. As I lighted the candle, I was horror-struck to see so many cockroaches, mouse, and ugly insects crawling on the floor. Jumping over them, I went to the bedroom. I was cursing myself for coming alone to the village so late at night. I wanted to run back to my home; but it was too late! The next bus to the city was to run next morning. I had no option but to spend the night alone at the old house!
After securing the bolts of all the doors, I finally readied my bed. The candle was not long enough to last for a few hours. So, I blew it out and lay on the dusty bed. Soon I fell asleep. In the middle of the night I was woken up by a strange sound. As I opened my eyes and focused on the sound, I felt someone was walking up and down outside my room. My heart began palpitating uncontrollably! I dared to go to the window and see who could be walking up and down outside the room! What I saw temporarily sent me into a faint! Before fainting I had a glimpse of a woman standing with her back towards me just in front of the window I was looking through. As the woman turned slowly towards me, I was transfixed with fear and stupefaction! The woman had no face! There was a skull on her shoulders! And as I looked at her skeleton hands, I fell onto the ground.
