Answer:

The author repeatedly recounted to me his two-week, 200 -mile walk. He was bitten by a poisonous snake on the way and had to amputate a portion of his toe in order to survive.

Explanation:

As per the story, the author used to tell me a tonne of wartime tales, but my favourite was the one about his breakout from a Japanese POW camp in Burma. He repeatedly recounted to me his two-week, 200-mile walk. He was bitten by a poisonous snake on the way and had to amputate a portion of his toe in order to survive. However, the wound did not heal, and by the time he arrived at an Indian camp, it had become infected and required amputation of the leg. He seems to be happy with his situation in life. According to him, his pension provides for all of his needs.
