Answer:

• The poem The Tale of a Melon City is written ht poet Vikram Seth. The poem describes the story of a town whose king was a melon. But if deeper analysis of the poem is made, one can understand that the poem is actually questioning the governance and justice system.

Explanation:

• The poem starts with the description of the story in which the king ordered his workmen to build an arch for spectators. Once the arch was completed the king went to visit it, but his crown was stuck in the arch because it was build very low.

• The king was furious at this incident and summoned his officers to find the culprit. First they wanted to hang the workmen, but then they said that it was the fault of the architects, the architects in turn blamed the king for approving the faulty design.

• The public demanded hanging of the king and he was hanged. Soon a Proclamation was released by his ministers that the first person walking by the city gates will chose their next king.

• The next day an idoit passed by the gate, and when asked about who he thinks should be the king, he said a melon, because he was very fond of melons. Therefore, the ministers brought a melon to the palace and proclaimed him as the new king, and hence the legend of the Melon King.

• The poem seems very childish, but it is intended to highlight the shortcomings of the governance and the justice system. It also highlights how blame game works in a bureaucracy.

• It depicts a monarch, whose orders are followed by everyone in his kingdom, no matter how absurd it may seem.

• And also the corruption of his ministers who is ready to do everything to save themselves and the monarchy.
