Answer:
A great Disney tales begin with a book opening, and end with a love affair. Mine is no different.
In a school library in Putney sometime in the Seventies, I was scanning a shelf full of picture books and found myself drawn to a large and colourful volume that turned out to be about a magical land called America.
I don't remember too many of the details of the book, except that it had a blue cover liberally sprinkled with stars, and contained inside a vivid collection of pictures that looked like nothing my south-west London eyes had ever seen before.
One page in particular stood out: the image of a mouse and a fairytale castle in a place that I later came to recognise as Disneyland seared themselves onto my brain, and began working a magic spell that, like the broomsticks in the Sorcerer's Apprentice, has been growing and multiplying ever since.
Back then, long-haul trips were rare, but thanks to a great deal of saving and sacrifice on my parents’ part, we made it to Florida’s Walt Disney World in 1982.
As my 11-year-old eyes took in their first glimpse of Main Street USA, the love affair was cemented. I have returned many times since, with my parents, my wife and our kids. We have been to the parks in Paris, and finally even managed to get to the “real” Disneyland in California. Each time we set foot in any of the Disney parks, I feel the same wonder I did as an 11-year-old boy.
We live about fifteen minutes from Chessington World of Adventures, but my family has spent 10 times as many hours on Disney property as it has in the park on our own doorstep; we aren’t theme park junkies.
We went to Disney when our kids, who are now 12 and six, were babies. While they may not remember those trips, my wife and I can recount the time spent in the spotless, and charmingly themed, baby care centres in the parks, feeding and changing them, as vividly as most teens could tell you about the thrills on Space Mountain, or the Tower of Terror.
