Additional information:-

★ Direct speech – Saying a conversation directly by using the exact words of the speaker is known as direct speech. While writing, the original words of the person should be always written inside inverted commas.

• Example:- I said to my friend, "Please lend me your notebook for a while".

★ Indirect speech – It can be defined as, saying something what the speaker had said but by making some modifications. Inverted commas (“ ”) should be ignored while writing.

• Example:- I requested my friend to lend me his/her notebook for a while. $\:$

Rules to change direct speech to indirect speech (Imperative):

1. Quotation marks (“ ”) and comma (,) should be removed.
2. "Said" or "said to" should be replaced by advised, recommended, suggested, ordered, requested or instructed.
3. Conjunction "to" has to be used to join the two parts.
4. Tense must not be changed since we write it in infinitive form (to).

Things to Remember in Direct and Indirect Speech:–

In Direct Speech -

1. The exact words of the speaker are put within Inverted Commas (“ ”).
2. The Direct Speech is separated from the remaining sentence by a Comma ( , ).
3. The first word of the Reported Speech begins with a Capital Letter.

In Indirect Speech -

1. No Inverted Commas are used.
2. No Comma is used to separate the Reported speech from the rest of the sentence.
3. A Conjunction, if necessary, is used to join the Reported Speech with the rest of the sentence.
4. The Tense of the Verb undergoes a change. (The Tense of the Verb in the Reported Speech is changed from Present to Past).
