If the reported verb in the direct speech is in present or past tense but the reported speech is universal truth and daily routine then the reported verb in indirect speech will be as it is and also the tense of the reported speech will remain in present tense.
For e.g.:-
1. He says,'The earth is round.'
He says that the earth is round.
2. He said,'He wash his hands everyday before and after eating.'
He said that he wash his hand everyday before and after eating.
For e.g.:-

when there is universal truth in reported speech of direct speech then the verb of the reported speech will remain in present tense...
