A Different Festival of Lights
In 165 BCE the Jews, led by a man called Judah Maccabee and his four brothers, drove the
Syrion Tyrant Antiochus IV out of their lands. Antiochus
hed desecrated the Temple of Jerusalem, which was
sacred to Jews. After cleansing the temple, they began
the ceremony of rededication, which involved lighting
on oil lamp. Once the lamp was lat it could never be
allowed to go out. There was only enough sacred oil
available to keep the lamp burning for one day. The
oil was put in the lamp, and it was lit. Miraculously, the
lamp remained lit for eight days, until more of the
purified oil could be found.
Jews all over the world celebrate the festival of Hanukkah (also called Chanukah') each year
to mark the rededication of the temple. The festival is celebrated over eight days to commemorate
