The author had one job (mentioned in the book u should be knowing this) . he was a soldier of an african country near the ebro delta. The fascists were advancing towards the ebro delta (the african country and fascists were at armed conflict at that time ) and therefore the author was anxious to when he would hear the first noises that the fascists had reached the ebro delta and started firing . (artillery was being used ).
