The first thing to understand is what is nationalism? It is just the understandings, boundaries, and ideologies that have emerged through historical processes. 
The industrial revolution has paved the way for nationalism as it has given access to unprecedented powerful tools. 
As we know in early times fewer people had access to these power tools, that had a influence on large number of people. 
With fewer people controlling massive mount of energy thus having massive power, they started building infrastructure on their own, using their wealth gained from this energy sources. This centralized power to them only. So, this centralization lead to the development of nationalism that has emerged from industries
