Nativism refers to a policy by which the social and economic interests of the original citizens are protected against foreign immigrants.

In the 19th century Chinese and European immigrants entered the American territory by means of cheap labour. This hurted the interests of local workers and artists.

To stop them a nativism policy was supported by the US government to control or restrict the working areas of immigrants and give preference to unemployed Americans.

Nativism is a term which is used to define the negative sentiments the natives of a particular region, especially a country, has towards the immigrants coming to their place.

Nativism has been supported by numerous countries , mostly the United States of America, and the other colonizers , since the 1920s.
