Answer:

Identify element pairs which are likely to form ionic or covalent bonds

Key Points

Ionic compounds are formed from strong electrostatic interactions between ions, which result in higher melting points and electrical conductivity compared to covalent compounds.

Covalent compounds have bonds where electrons are shared between atoms. Due to the sharing of electrons, they exhibit characteristic physical properties that include lower melting points and electrical conductivity compared to ionic compounds.

Nature of bonding affects the properties of the compounds, in the following ways -

  • Melting point : The melting point is an important property of any chemical compound which is totally dependent on the nature of the chemical bonding of that chemical compound. A strong chemical bonding will cause the requirement of high amount of heat energy to break the internal bonds of a substance for melting process, thus causing a higher melting point and vice versa for weak chemical bonding. For this same reason, the ionic compounds have higher melting points than the covalent compounds.
  • Solubility : The solubility property of any compound is also dependent upon the nature of chemical bonding of a substance. The ionic bonds are formed in the ionic compounds, and these ionic bonds are easily breakable by the liquids like water, that's why ionic compounds are soluble in solvents like water. On the other hand, the nonpolar substances with covalent bondings are not soluble in the polar solvents like water. So, solubility is definitely dependent on the chemical bonding.
