Rose is an ornamental flower, which is a member of Rosaceae. Carpels are indefinite in number, generally not fused in nature(apocarpous).

  • Rose flowers are actinomorphic (radially symmetrical).
  • The individual unit of the Gynoecium(female sex organ) is called the carpel and the number of carpels ranges from 1 - 50.
  • The Ovary is superior i.e ovary is present at the highest position while other whorls are originated below the gynoecium (hypogynous flowers)sometimes inferior(epigynous flowers) like in the case of Pyrus species(eg. apples)
  • Placentation is the arrangement of ovules on the placenta of the ovary. Basal placentation is usually found in apocarpous rose flowers.
  • In some cases, if the carpels are united(syncarpous), the placentation is axile.
  • A nectar secreting disc is also present between the stamens and the carpels.
