Why there is a need to pass the evolved Hydrogen gas through a soap solution? Can't we just pass it through distilled or pure water? What would happen if we passed the Hydrogen gas through pure or distilled water?

Explanation:

The Hydrogen gas is passed through soap solution so that it will become bubble and we can clearly see the hydrogen bubble floating in air , but if we pass through water it can be seen only in water , when it comes in air the bubble breaks and we can't see the hydrogen bubble.

On passing hydrogen gas through soap solution it does not get dissolved in it, and the solution easily form bubbles containing hydrogen gas. The presence of hydrogen gas can be tested with the help of a burning splinter near the bubbles. Therefore, soap solution can be used in testing of hydrogen gas.
