This means that scribes wrote the manuscripts and inscriptions on different surfaces and many of these have not survived(destroyed by animals or climatic conditions). Because these surfaces no longer exist, historians are unable to find out that part of history which was written on it. Also sometimes these surfaces were rocks and they got erased or washed out. At that time paper was rarely available and most of the time not available so these people used the bark of trees to write. Sometimes these barks were also lost or destroyed or even eaten up by animals.
