1. Velu stood on the platform but he felt " as if he was still on a moving train " . It is because he was weak as he was hungry and tired and due to which his legs were shaking.

2. Velu felt miserable because he was confused seeing the crowd, he was hungry and some people were bumping him with their luggages.

3.i) Velu travelled without a ticket because he had no money to buy one.

ii) He escaped the ticket collector's attention because the ticket collector did not come to that unreserved compartment.

4. Velu ran away from home because his father snatched all the money Velu and his sister earned and would buy alcohol. He even beat his children.

5. Velu followed the 'strange' girl because he neither knew where to go nor did he know how to read the signboards as they were written in English.

1. Velu was able to read Tamil but not English. Because he was able to read the signboard written in Tamil but was unable to read the signboards written in English.

2.i) She is referring to jail.

ii) She pointed out Velu that doing wrong was not so important as escaping the police or getting caught.

The sentence is "You don't have to do anything. Just don't get caught, that's all" means the same thing.

3.i) The girl leads Velu to a marriage hall.

ii) They got to eat some food from the garbage bin which were the left overs of the people who attended the marriage feast. They eat a vada and a squashy banana.

3. No, Velu was not happy to work as a ragpicker, but he had no choice till he could find a better job.

1. No, Velu was not a smart boy. He runs away from his home to escape his father's beatings. He felt miserable at the Railway Station. He knew nothing about the place he had travelled to. He expected to find work in a farm, not even knowing that there were no farms. He chooses to follow Jaya without knowing anything about her.

2. Yes, Jaya is a brave and sensitive girl. She takes pity on Velu and gets food for him. She herself earns her livelihood bravely by collecting discarded material and selling them. She has a sense of humor also. She calls the 'dirty trickle of water Bucklingham Canal' which displays a brilliant sense of humor.

3. Yes, the plastics, the paper and rusty metal sheets thrown away by the people become valuable to ragpickers. They eat leftover food for their survival. They sell junk food to some dealer to earn their livelihood.
