Answer the following questions.
(a) Classify the following substances as magnetic or non-magnetic.
copper, phosphorus, iron, cobalt, soil, water, silver mercury, nickel, wood, oil.
(b) In olden times, how as a magnet placed in a compass?

a.) Magnetic substances- iron, cobalt and nickel.
Non-magnetic substances- copper, phosphorous, soil, water(it's diamagnetic -slightly repelled when brought close to a magnet but not quite noticeable) , wood, oil.
b.) In olden times, a magnet was placed in a compass by magnetizing an iron needle with the help of stroking a lodestone against it.
