How did the Old City of Delhi change under the British rule?

The famed water canal system of the Old Delhi deteriorated. Growth in population led to further overcrowding. Many havelis were subdivided and sold. The street front of the havelis were turned into shops and warehouses. The drainage system also collapsed.

The British change the old city of Delhi interely. The Wanted Delhi to forget its Mughal past the area around the fort was completely cleared to Garden pavilions and Mosque. The either destroyed the mosque you or put them to other use for example the Zinnat- at- Masjid was converted into Bakery No workship was allowed in Jama masjed for 5 years.

One third of city was demlished and it's canal were filled up. In the 1817 the Western walls of Shahjahanabad were broken to establish the railway and allow the City to expand beyond the wall. The British begin living in the sprawling Civil Lines area that came up in the northway walled City.
