The british refused to accept the adopted son of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi as the heir to the throne. According to the Doctrine of Lapse , Heirs adopted without the consent of the Britishers could inherit on the private property of the deceased ruler and not his territory , which would then come under the British Rule.
As the king of Jhansi died without a natural heir , the adopted son , Anand Rao was not recognised as a lawful successor of the throne by the Britishers.
