Paheli had heard that rain water is as good as distilled water. So, she collected some rain water in a clean glass tumbler and tested it using a tester. To her surprise, she found that the compass needle showed deflection. What could be the reasons?

rainwater may be contaminated by impurities suspended in the atmosphere though it is as pure as distilled water.These impurities make the rainwater conducting.Thus the compass needles show the deflection.

After collecting some rainwater to know whether it is as good as distilled water, Paheli found that the compass needle showed deflection as the rainwater collected by Paheli contains salts dissolved in it.  

Explanation:

• The salts dissolved in water act as a conducting medium.
• So the rainwater collected allowed the electricity to conduct through it due to which the compass needle has shown deflection.
• However, water which is distilled in nature does not contain dissolved salts in it so it does not have any property of showing deflection in compass.
