Collect the following solutions from the science laborato
hydrochloric acid (HCI), sulphuric acid (H2SO4), nitric acid (HNO
id (HNO), 2.1.2
acetic acid (CH COOH), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), calcin
hydroxide (Ca(OH),1, potassium hydroxide (KOH), magnesiu
hydroxide [Mg(OH),], and ammonium hydroxide (NH,OH).
Put a drop of each of the above solutions on a watch-glass one by
one and test with a drop of the indicators shown in Table 2.1.
What change in colour did you observe with red litmus, blue litmus
phenolphthalein and methyl orange solutions for each of the
solutions taken?
Tabulate your observation.

Answer:

  • HCl hydrochloric acid. }

H2SO4 SULPHURIC ACID. } ACIDS

HNO3 nitric acid }

  • CH3COOH acetic ACID. }

  • NaOH sodium hydroxide
  • Ca(OH) 2 calcium hydroxide
  • KOH potassium hydroxide
  • Mg(OH) 2 magnesium hydroxide
  • NH4OH Ammonium hydroxide
  • all these are bases

when we dip of red litmus solution with all acid solutions we would get the same colour that is red

the same minor when we dip of red litmus paper in bases solutions we would get of blue colour

if we add of phenolphthalein solution in acid we could see there won't be any change of colour

but in base solution it gives a pink colour

then by adding of methyl orange solution in acids we would get a red colour and in bases it gives yellow colour
