KERALA, August 09 : An Air India Express flight crash-landed at Kerala’s Kozhikode airport around 7.40 pm on Friday. The Air India Express plane had left for Kozhikode in Kerala from Dubai with 191 passengers. The plane’s wheel slipped/skidded due to heavy rain after landing on the airport’s runway number 10. The pilot could not stop the plane even after reaching the very end of the runway. As a result, the plane fell into a 60-foot-deep ditch and split in two. 18 persons were killed including pilot and many passengers were injured. Several fire engines and ambulances rushed to the spot immediately and started the rescue operation. The injured persons were taken to the Malapuram hospital. All passengers were rescued from the plane. The condition of 45 of them was critical. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau began investigating of the incident. At night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Kerala Chief Minister Kinaray Vijay and inquired about the rescue operation. Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh for the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 for those who sustained minor injuries.
