Let me answer this in the context of my country, Britain. We've 2 parties, labor and conservative. Both are at loggerheads with each other. So I feel that a coalition between them is impossible. But in the case of a multi party system it's a common phenomenon to observe a coalition. Power sharing is not a simple issue. Parties with divergent ideologies joining together to form a government is indeed a hackle.
