Nearly sixty years after Sir Edmund Hillary and
Tenzing Norgay became the first men to conquer Mount
Everest on May 29, 1953, there has been a steady stream of
people taking to the Himalayas. Until Tenzing scaled the
Everest, it had defeated all its challengers. Since then, 574
people have stood there and 118 have died trying. But the
challenge of Everest the highest peak in the world-remains
and many of the great mountaineers have been Indians.
It was in 1984 that Bachendri Pal became a pioneer
the first woman to scale the Everest, and since then the news
of women conquering the peak has been heard again and
again. Santosh Yadav did so twice in one year
Santosh was born in Joniyawas, a small village in Haryana and saw a mountain
for the first time in 1986. The mountains fascinated her, but she was the only girl child
with five brothers and nobody encouraged her. She almost ran away from home to join
the mountaineering institute. Within six years, on May 2, 1992 when she first
unfurled the tricolour atop Everest, she had joined the select band of 15 women who
have scaled the highest peak in the world. She is the first and the only woman in the
world to have scaled Mount Everest several times, including two successive climbs in
less than one year.
