Conserving water is fast becoming a hot topic across the nation. Water is one of our most precious natural resources. Although the Earth's surface is 70% water, only 2.5% is fresh water. The amount of fresh water available for human use and consumption, however, is less than 1% of the fresh water.

Drought and the potential impacts of climate change only adds to the uncertainty surrounding water availability.

There are many ways to conserve water around the home including fixing dripping taps, not allowing the water to run while brushing teeth, and using low-flow toilets and fixtures. Another approach, with the potential for significantly more water savings, is outdoor water conservation.

In some parts of the US, outdoor irrigationof lawns and landscapes accounts for as much as 75% of annual per capita water use.

Planning and designing lawns and landscapes with lower water requirements and improving the efficiency of outdoor irrigation can help to conserve water while maintaining the beauty of our outdoor environment.

Necessity of water conservation

Water is the most precious gift of nature. Water is necessary for life. Water is needed for domestic, agricultural and industrial purposes. There is no resource more precious than water. It is also the most misused and misunderstood resource.

Approximately 73% of the earth is water. But fresh and drinkable water is only about 3%. The remaining 70% is undrinkable salty sea and ocean water. Hence the urgent need to protect our drinking water sources from pollution and also to conserve water in our daily lives. Water conservation is the prevention of water wastage and water scarcity. There are different methods to save water:

1. Rain water harvesting is the best and most suitable method.

2. Prevent dripping of water from taps and showers. Quickly repair leakage from water pipes.

3. Use new low-volume flush toilets. Adopt water-efficient dishes and clothes washing methods.

4. Use an irrigation system which uses water efficiently and prevent wasting.

5. While brushing your teeth or shaving do not waste water. Turn off the tap when not in use.

6. Take shorter showers.

7. The water used for washing vegetable, fruits, and dishes should not be wasted. Reuse for watering garden plants and flowers.

8. Trees retain rain water in the soil and is later available to us as underground water. Plant more trees.

Environmentalists warned that due to the scarcity of water, their will be riots among people of the same locality. Water is essential to sustain life. For the survival mankind and all living things it is necessary to explore every means to prevent pollution of water and wastage of water.
