let the numbers be x and x+2
therefore,
product=x(x+2)=168
  x^2+2 x-168=0
x^2+14 x-12 x-168=0
x(x+14)-12(x+14)=0
     (x+14) (x-12)=0
hence,x=-14 or x=12
if x=-14                               if x=12,
x+2=-14+2=-12                  x+2=12+2=14
so the numbers are 12 &14     or    -12 &-14
